That’s how popular it is in the country that there’s a lot of restaurants who are proud of serving Singapore’s national dish; poached chicken on white rice, served with soy sauce and chili garlic.

Would you be surprised if you were told that this dish didn't come from Hainan? When early immigrants from Hainan came to Singapore, they brought a dish called Wenchang chicken, a dish made with chicken and sauces.

Swee Kee Chicken Rice Restaurant in Singapore, then took the Wenchang chicken and fused their rice cooking technique with the Cantonese method of cooking with tender-fleshed chickens to create the Hainanese Chicken Rice that we know of today as the national dish of Singapore! It is also ranked #13 in the World’s 50 best food by CNN Travel.
